If you’re planning an adventurous winter getaway, there’s no better place to go than the Hotel Alyeska in Girdwood, Alaska. Located at the bottom of Mt. Alyeksa, this beautiful resort offers amenities and comfort. We went in the winter and the snow was epic. The drive from Anchorage to Girwood is beautiful too. And watch out, you may see a Dull sheep scaling the mountainside as you drive along.
Girdwood is located an hour from the city of Anchorage to the south. It’s a small town that draws visitors year round who like to partake in festivals, spend time skiing at Alyeska, or exploring the great outdoors. Beware: bears live there too.
In the beginning, Girdwood was called “Glacier City” due to the large glaciers there. Although the name has changed, it’s still possible to tour a glacier during your visit if you’re interested. People do all sorts of things in Girdwood from hiking to climbing Mt. Alyeska to exploring by vehicle to panning for gold. You can even take an air tour to get a birds’ eye view of the glaciers. Honestly, I think I’d be afraid to do that, but don’t let my anxiety stop you.
The dress is casual in the Girdwood area; after all, you can’t go hiking in a business suit. Unless of course you’re going to stop over at the Double Musky for their famous Cajun food; then you might want to go for a nice skirt for the ladies or a button down for the men. Not that the Double Musky has a dress code or anything, it’s just nice to clean up for a good dinner out. Though consider wearing something with an elastic waistband; the Double Musky feeds their patrons well. Also, if you’re going to have dinner there, go early; lines do form at the door…if you’re late, it’s worth the wait.
Although Girdwood and Hotel Alyeska aren’t that far from Anchorage, you won’t find a shopping center when you get there. The eclectic mixture of folks from around there are busy being their unique selves and don’t spend time running a local department store or fancy boutiques.
So come on over to Girdwood. Reserve a night (or two) at the Alyeska Resort. Bring your dog or your friend or the love of your life and be prepared to have fun. Whether you’re staying cozy indoors in the winter or out exploring everything the town has to offer, you will most definitely have a good time.
